Ingredients
📌 Apples: 6 cups (about 6 medium), peeled, cored, and sliced ¼ inch thick
📌 Sugar: ¾ cup
📌 Flour: 2 tablespoons (for thickening)
📌 Cinnamon: ¾ teaspoon
📌 Salt: ¼ teaspoon
📌 Nutmeg: ⅛ teaspoon
📌 Lemon Juice: 1 tablespoon (to enhance the flavor)
📌 Pie Crust: 1 double pastry crust (store-bought or homemade)
📌 Egg Wash: 1 beaten egg (for a golden, glossy finish)
Instructions
1️⃣ Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
2️⃣ Line a 9-inch pie plate with the bottom crust, trimming any excess.
3️⃣ In a bowl, mix apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg, and lemon juice.
4️⃣ Pour the apple mixture into the crust-lined pie plate.
5️⃣ Roll out the second pie crust and place it over the filling. Seal and crimp the edges.
6️⃣ Cut small slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
7️⃣ Brush the top crust with egg wash and sprinkle with sugar.
8️⃣ Bake at 425°F for 15 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 375°F and bake for 30 more minutes until golden brown.
9️⃣ Cool on a cooling rack before serving
Notes
✔️ Prevent over-browning: Cover the edges with foil strips after 15–20 minutes.
✔️ Best apples for pie: Try Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji for the perfect balance of tart and sweet.
✔️ Egg wash options:
- For a glossy golden finish: Use a whole egg beaten with a splash of water.
- For a deep golden brown: Use just egg yolk with a little cream.
- For a matte, slightly crisp texture: Use just egg white.
