Preparation
1. Prepare Dry Ingredients:
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
2. Mix Wet Ingredients:
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar until creamy.
- Add the egg and milk, stirring until fully combined.
3. Combine Dough:
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Mix until the dough forms and pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
4. Add Color (Optional):
- Transfer the dough to a workspace dusted with powdered sugar.
- Knead in a drop or two of food coloring to create a colored dough, if desired.
5. Chill Dough:
- Shape the dough into a log, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
6. Preheat Oven & Prepare Sheets:
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
7. Slice & Bake Cookies:
- Slice the chilled dough into ¼-⅓ inch thick rounds.
- Place the cookies on the prepared baking sheets, leaving a small gap between each.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
- Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
8. Decorate & Add Messages:
- Once cooled, decorate with white frosting, sprinkles, and heart shapes as desired.
- Use chocolate writing frosting to personalize each cookie with messages.
- Allow decorations to set before serving or storing.
